Miriam Velez

After seventeen years at a prominent Chicago-based property management firm, I joined the Brixmor team in 2017. I strongly believe in Brixmor’s vision and core principles along with its supportive work environment that makes Brixmor the national leader in commercial real estate.

“Great real estate matters, but great people matter even more” is a guiding principle at Brixmor. I believe this creates a welcoming environment, and it is the reason why I have joined the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Leadership Council. I embrace diversity and practices that create a supportive and respectful work environment for all employees.

My story is like many others of our great country. I am a Latina, a first-generation Puerto Rican from Chicago, with English being my second language. I was the first in my family to graduate high school, receive a college degree and obtain my MBA. There were a lot of challenges along the way and I struggled with a sense of not belonging. Now, having overcome many of those challenges, I want everyone in our company, and those starting their professional journeys, to have a different experience, an experience of feeling welcomed and supported.

I think it is great that diversity, equity and inclusion are as important to Brixmor as it is for me. I am intrigued by different backgrounds, inspired by diverse groups, and I am excited to continue to learn and grow alongside other creative professionals. There is always an opportunity to change mindsets toward establishing a healthy, inclusive work culture that allows employees to direct their energy toward being their happiest, most productive selves for the betterment of our company and community.
